Trás-os-Montes

by Eduardo Perez Sanchez

A stunning black-and-white photography album, reissued in 2022 by INTER+VALUE.

Captured in the 1980s in the Trás-os-Montes mountains of northern Portugal, near the Galician border, these photographs evoke the spirit and stark grace of a rural world now lost to time.

Life unfolded among sturdy granite houses and fragile wooden balustrades, set against a backdrop of roughly cobbled streets, sparse grain fields, and the ever-present company of domestic animals. The hardship and frugality of everyday life forged resilient temperaments, reflected in piercing gazes, weathered faces, and proud or weary postures, all captured with great mastery by the photographer.

Many working-age adults had already left in search of better opportunities for themselves and their families, making them largely absent from the photographs. Many working-age adults had already left in search of better opportunities for themselves and their families, making them largely absent from the photographs. Today, the villages still stand, scattered across valleys and mountains, but are now home to only a sparse, ageing population.

Museu Etnológico José Quina

José Quina Ethnological Museum

The full catalogue, published by INTER+VALUE in 2023, of the significant collection curated by José Quina in the museum space he created within his own home in Vimioso, Portugal.

The museum space and this collection bring together everyday objects from rural life across different periods of the 20th century – from farming tools and household items to technological novelties of the time such as bicycles, radio, and typewriters.

More than a simple inventory, the catalogue offers a glimpse into a not-so-distant past shared by much of Europe and the Mediterranean world – a time when human life remained closely tied to the rhythms of nature.

Terras de Vimioso, suas gentes e costumes

Vimioso region, its People and Customs

by Eduardo Perez Sanchez

A colour photography album taken in the Vimioso region (Portugal) in 2023, published by INTER+VALUE in 2024.

Located in the far northeast of Portugal, in the Trás-os-Montes mountains, the municipality of Vimioso comprises 22 villages nestled in valleys or spread along sunlit, windswept hillsides.

This richly illustrated album reveals an entire region with its traditional architecture, including churches, houses, castles, bridges, fountains, alongside modern facilities such as schools, a swimming pool, and a thermal spa. It showcases the local greenery and landscapes, whose colours shift with the seasons; native breeds of animals like donkeys and cattle; and enduring customs such as festive celebrations, religious processions and local cuisine.
